Nagpur: Speed Demons Rule Roads, Pedestrians Fear for Lives
20 Feb
Summary
- Daily average of 132 signal jumpers and 44 speedsters caught in Nagpur.
- Nearly 1,900 helmetless riders fined daily, totaling 63% of violations.
- Traffic indiscipline shows rising impatience and disregard for road norms.

Nagpur's busy junctions have become a daily hazard for pedestrians, particularly the elderly and children, who face an uncertain risk every time they cross the road. Data from the Nagpur traffic police reveals a significant increase in road indiscipline. In 2025 alone, 48,286 motorists were fined for jumping signals, averaging 132 violations daily, alongside 16,333 speeding offenses.
Helmetless riding is a pervasive issue, with 6.95 lakh two-wheeler riders penalized in 2025, accounting for 63% of all enforcement actions. While signal jumping cases saw a slight decrease from previous years, wrong-side driving escalated significantly to 10,217 cases. These statistics, however, are believed to represent only a fraction of actual violators, highlighting a routine disregard for traffic norms.
Experts emphasize the need for visible and consistent enforcement, coupled with public awareness campaigns. The current situation leaves vulnerable road users, like seniors Vikas Pethe and Anil Vaidya, feeling intimidated and unsafe, with their safety dependent on the rare display of responsibility by motorists.
