Paramedic Recounts Myles Gray Intubation Struggle
6 Mar
Summary
- Paramedic found Myles Gray in cardiac arrest with bruises.
- Difficulty intubating Gray due to airway swelling noted.
- Police reported using batons and a lateral neck restraint.
A paramedic's testimony at a public hearing into the 2015 death of Myles Gray revealed challenges faced at the scene. Advanced life support paramedic Stephen Shipman stated that Gray was in cardiac arrest upon his arrival, with primary care paramedics already performing CPR. Gray presented with bruises and significant airway swelling, making intubation difficult.
Shipman was informed by an officer that batons and a lateral neck restraint were employed during Gray's arrest. The paramedic acknowledged that swelling can take time to develop, potentially impacting his assessment of the restraint's effects. Previous testimony indicated Gray's injuries were consistent with hanging, and a coroner's jury later ruled his death a homicide, defined as death due to injury intentionally inflicted by another person.
