Richard Wright has been convicted of the murder of Richard Dyson, following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court. Wright's childhood friend, Karl Schwalbe, was convicted of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice for aiding in the cover-up. Human remains, identified by DNA as Mr. Dyson, were found in a concrete-filled barrel at Alderthwaite Farm approximately three years after he was last seen alive. Forensic analysis of firearms from Wright's home matched those used in Mr. Dyson's death. Evidence also showed Wright had asked to leave a trailer at the farm, where a name badge bearing his name was later discovered alongside the barrel.
Wright and Schwalbe initially denied any knowledge of Mr. Dyson's disappearance. However, a review of mobile phone evidence revealed Wright had contacted the owner of Alderthwaite Farm shortly after Mr. Dyson went missing. Telephone records showed Wright made late-night calls to Schwalbe on the night of the murder, and CCTV captured Schwalbe's vehicle at Wright's home. Although both men claimed to not remember their meeting, recorded conversations exposed their lies. Wright faces sentencing for murder, preventing a lawful burial, and firearm offences, while Schwalbe will be sentenced for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice on August 6. This sentencing concludes a prolonged period of anguish for Mr. Dyson's family.
