Murder suspect sent to state hospital

A 22-year-old man, Rodrick Hurst Jr., accused of fatally shooting his step-mother nearly two years ago, will undergo treatment at a state hospital to determine his competency for trial. A psychologist's evaluation earlier this year indicated that Hurst, while unable to fully confer with his attorney, could potentially regain competency with treatment.

Circuit Court Judge Michael "Chip" Mills Jr. stated that legal standards require the court to ascertain if a defendant can comprehend proceedings, communicate rationally with counsel, and testify if necessary. The judge noted Hurst understands the charges but cannot assist his lawyer, leading to the recommendation for evaluation and treatment at the state hospital.

Hurst was apprehended on October 25, 2024, after police responded to a disturbance. His step-mother, Stacie Hurst, 42, was found deceased in the master bathroom of their residence. An AR-style rifle was discovered in Hurst's room, and evidence suggested multiple shots fired at the bathroom door.

Charged with first-degree murder, Hurst has been in custody for 20 months without bond. The duration of his stay at the state hospital and the outcome of his competency restoration remain uncertain. The judge acknowledged the victim's family's desire for a timely resolution but stressed adherence to legal procedures.

This case is not Hurst's first involvement with firearms. As a juvenile in the summer of 2020, he was implicated in a shooting incident. More recently, in October 2022, he was a suspect in a shooting at a residence where two men were targeted, though he was never arrested or indicted for that incident.
