Charges of murder and manslaughter against Amy Clarke, 34, in connection with the death of her five-week-old daughter, Darcy-Leigh Jefferson, were dropped. This development occurred as closing speeches were made at Stafford Crown Court. Prosecutors announced they would not proceed with the more serious charges.
Darcy-Leigh died on March 29, 2022, from a brain injury sustained two days prior. The trial had previously heard that the infant also suffered over 40 rib fractures and broken legs. Clarke denies the charge of causing or allowing the death of a child.
Darcy-Leigh's father, Sean Jefferson, 35, also denies murder, manslaughter, and the charge of causing or allowing his daughter's death. Both parents also deny charges of causing grievous bodily harm and child endangerment. The trial is ongoing.
