Mother and Daughter Killed in 140 MPH Crash

Zachary Chernicky, a 31-year-old software developer, has been charged with two counts of murder following a devastating crash on December 2, 2025, in San Jose, California. Prosecutors allege that Chernicky was driving his Tesla at speeds exceeding 140 mph before colliding with a Lexus stopped in traffic. The impact caused the Lexus to burst into flames, resulting in the deaths of Ivana Balistreri, 29, and her 1-year-old daughter, Lilliana. Lilliana was reportedly in a child safety seat behind her mother. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office emphasized that the charges stem from the driver's alleged extreme speed, not the make of the vehicle. Data suggests Chernicky was traveling at 102 mph upon impact. His Tesla also struck another vehicle, and three vehicles caught fire. Chernicky was arrested on July 13, is being held without bail, and has a court date set for August 25. The California Highway Patrol highlighted the incident as a warning against speeding, stating that reckless drivers will be held accountable.
