Summary
- Accused now wear maroon T-shirts and black shorts to curb suicides.
- Lock-up infrastructure, including bathroom doors, is being modified.
- Over 54 custodial deaths were reported in Maharashtra from 2020-2023.

Mumbai Police have instituted a mandatory dress code for individuals in custody to prevent suicides. Detainees will now wear maroon half-sleeve T-shirts and black shorts, specifically designed to eliminate materials that could be used for self-harm like hanging.
This policy change follows a review of safety protocols after over 54 custodial deaths were recorded in Maharashtra between 2020 and 2023. The death of Anuj Thapan in custody, reportedly by suicide, further underscored the need for stricter preventive measures.
Beyond clothing, lock-up infrastructure is also being upgraded. Bathroom doors are being altered by removing upper and lower sections to prevent detainees from isolating themselves and attempting self-harm. Officials emphasize greater attention to the mental well-being of those in custody.
