HC Restores Power, Water to Dilapidated Mumbai Building
14 May
Summary
- Bombay High Court ordered restoration of essential services.
- An 80-year-old resident petitioned for water and electricity.
- The ruling is a temporary, humanitarian measure by the court.

The Bombay High Court has intervened to restore essential services to a dilapidated building in Bandra West, Mumbai. A vacation bench directed the BMC to reinstate electricity and water supply to Rup Niwas, a ground-plus-two floor structure, following a petition by an 80-year-old resident, Ghansham Singh Narang.
The court's decision, issued on May 14, 2026, is strictly a temporary measure and based on humanitarian considerations. Narang, who has resided in the building since 1975, argued that the disconnection of services on May 6, 2026, posed an imminent threat.
While acknowledging the building's dilapidated state, the judges prioritized the senior citizen's welfare, stating he should not be displaced suddenly. The BMC noted that other residents had already vacated their flats. The court granted Narang permission to reside in his premises until May 25, 2026, at his own risk, with the BMC not being held responsible.
