Mumbai Family's Tragic End: Rat Poison Found in Watermelon
8 May
Summary
- Four family members died last month from rat poison ingestion.
- Forensic report confirmed zinc phosphide in deceased and watermelon.
- Two fruit sellers were arrested in connection with the deaths.

Four members of a Mumbai family succumbed to rat poison last month, with forensic reports confirming the lethal substance in their systems and in a watermelon they consumed. The deceased were identified as Abdulla Dokadia, 44, his wife Nasrin, 35, and their daughters Aayesha, 16, and Zaineb, 13.
The family, residents of Ghari Mohalla, had gathered with relatives on the night of April 25. In the early hours of April 26, they ate pieces of watermelon and subsequently experienced severe vomiting and diarrhea.
They were rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to the government-run JJ Hospital, where all four passed away during treatment. The forensic report detected zinc phosphide in their viscera and stomach contents. While the watermelon tested positive, other food items were clear.
Two fruit sellers have been arrested in connection with the incident. Police are investigating whether the consumption of the poisoned fruit was accidental or intentional, noting the lack of a clear motive for the family to take such an extreme step. The JJ Marg police are conducting further investigations and have recorded statements from relatives and neighbors.
