Two constables from the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Mumbai, identified as Anil Gujar and Tushar Thakur, were suspended on September 7, 2026. This action was taken after a citizen reported their alleged involvement in facilitating the transport of banned gutka from Gujarat into Mumbai.
An inquiry found evidence of the constables being in contact with gutka suppliers and assisting in the movement of these consignments. The suspension was ordered by Mumbai Railway Police Commissioner Rakesh Kalasagar following the inquiry's findings.
Sources indicate that this might be part of a larger operation, with allegations that storage contractors and personnel from the Railway Protection Force and other security agencies were also involved. These individuals were reportedly paid to allow regular transportation of gutka.
Consignments were allegedly transported on various trains, including mail and express services, loaded at stations like Vasai and Borivali. Evidence reportedly included videos of gutka packets concealed in storage compartments of air-conditioned coaches and black bags on long-distance trains arriving at Bandra Terminus.
