4 Oct
Summary
- Builder denied anticipatory bail in alleged extortion case.
- Accused allegedly demanded ₹18 crore, settled for ₹11 crore.
- Court cited video, call, and financial records against him.
A Mumbai builder, Rajwinder Singh, proprietor of Rajlakshmi Companies, has been denied anticipatory bail by the Sessions Court. The bail was refused in connection with an alleged extortion case linked to a Bandra redevelopment project. The Mumbai Crime Branch opposed the bail, presenting evidence that the accused had initially demanded ₹18 crore, which was later settled at ₹11 crore.
Prosecutors argued that Singh threatened to obstruct the redevelopment and involved members of the Chhota Rajan gang. The case originated last month when the Anti-Extortion Cell arrested five individuals for attempting to extort ₹11 crore from a developer over a prime Bandra property. Singh and another individual, allegedly linked to the Rajan gang, are considered absconding accused.
Additional Sessions Judge PA Sable rejected Singh's bail application. The prosecution highlighted that Singh provided ₹10 lakh and sent men to the site. Despite Singh's claims of false implication due to a property dispute, the court noted video, call, mobile data, and financial evidence suggesting links to co-accused. The investigators require Singh's custodial interrogation to trace the money trail and identify other conspirators.
