An attempt to smuggle hydroponic weed valued at approximately Rs 2 crore was thwarted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on March 20, 2026. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel intercepted a loader within the terminal building exiting with a backpack. Suspicious contents were detected during X-ray screening, leading to a closer inspection.
Further examination revealed approximately 2 kilograms of hydroponic weed hidden in the backpack. The estimated market value of the seized narcotic was close to Rs 2 crore. The individual, along with the contraband, was handed over to the Customs Department for further legal action and investigation.
The incident highlights concerns about potential internal involvement in smuggling activities. Official data indicates that the Airport Commissionerate at Mumbai's airport recorded seizures of over 1,330 kilograms of hydroponic weed in 244 cases during the financial year 2025-26 up to March 18, 2026, resulting in 286 arrests.
