Mother-in-Law Kills Daughter-in-Law for Railway Job and Cash

In Maharashtra's Thane district, a 60-year-old woman was arrested on January 1, 2026, for allegedly murdering her daughter-in-law. The victim, Rupali Vilas Gangurde, 35, was found deceased near the Waldhuni bridge in Kalyan with severe injuries. Initially, an accidental death report was filed, but the investigation took a turn when the accused, identified as Latabai Natha Gangurde, reported her daughter-in-law missing.

Investigators discovered that Rupali's husband, a railway employee, had died in September 2025. A financial dispute arose over his gratuity money, estimated at Rs 9-10 lakh, which Latabai allegedly demanded. Furthermore, a conflict emerged regarding Vilas's railway job, with Latabai wanting her grandson to be hired, while Rupali had applied herself.

The crime branch arrested Latabai and her accomplice, Jagdish Mahadev Mhatre, 67. Police allege they attacked Rupali with an iron rod, then attempted to conceal the murder by dumping her body and cleaning the scene. The motive is believed to be greed for money and control over the government job.
