Mother Convicted of Murder After Throwing Baby Off Balcony

A mother, Channel Yonko, has been convicted of murdering her 17-month-old daughter, Hannah Yonko. The conviction came after prosecutors presented evidence that Yonko stabbed her child and threw her from a third-floor balcony at the Beachfront Palms Hotel in October 2024. Responding officers found the child alive on the pavement, but she succumbed to her injuries, which included multiple stab wounds and trauma from the fall.

Hotel surveillance footage captured the incident, and a knife was recovered from a nearby hotel bin. During the trial, defense attorneys argued that Yonko was insane and believed she was possessed by demons at the time of the crime. However, psychiatric evaluations determined she was competent to stand trial, and the jury rejected the insanity defense. This led to an automatic life sentence without parole, as mandated by Texas law for the murder of a child under 10.

This case has been described as emotional by prosecutors, with jurors expressing sorrow for the victim. Records also indicate a prior incident in 2019 involving another child, where Yonko and the child's father appeared to be under the influence. The Galveston County District Attorney's office confirmed they were not seeking the death penalty.
