6 Mar
Summary
- A one-year-old marmoset monkey was found in a car outside HMP Moorlands.
- Crack cocaine was discovered in the vehicle alongside the primate.
- Two women were arrested on suspicion of drug offenses.

During a search of a vehicle outside HMP Moorlands prison in Doncaster last week, officers discovered a one-year-old marmoset monkey. This primate was an unexpected passenger alongside a quantity of crack cocaine. The "cheeky" marmoset has since been safely relocated to an RSPCA sanctuary.
Following the discovery, two women in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply drugs. The RSPCA is now conducting further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding how the monkey came to be in the vehicle.
This incident occurred as part of Operation Gartley, a regular initiative involving police and prison services to search visitors to Doncaster prisons. New legislation requiring specialist primate licenses for private keepers in England is set to take effect on April 6, 2026.
