Summary
- California mother charged after son's e-bike critically injured a veteran.
- The e-bike was allegedly modified and capable of high speeds.
- Authorities warned the mother about illegal e-bike use prior to the incident.

A California mother is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after her child critically injured an 81-year-old man while riding an e-bike. Tommi Jo Mejer, 50, was arrested on child endangerment and accessory charges, among others. Prosecutors stated that Mejer had been previously warned not to allow her son to ride the vehicle.
The victim, identified as Ed Ashman, a Vietnam veteran and substitute teacher, is currently in critical condition at the hospital. Investigators reported that Mejer's son was riding an e-motorcycle modified to reach speeds up to 60 mph and was performing "wheelies" when he collided with Ashman. Under California law, vehicles exceeding certain speed limits or modified are classified as e-motorcycles, requiring a license and insurance.
Authorities had previously warned Mejer in June that her son was operating the e-motorcycle illegally, as he lacked the required license. Body camera footage reportedly shows Mejer acknowledging the dangers and illegality of the vehicle. The District Attorney hopes this case will serve as a cautionary tale for parents regarding the responsible use of e-bikes and e-motorcycles.
