Mizoram Jail: Forged Orders Led to 17 Prisoner Releases
10 May
Summary
- Seventeen prisoners were illegally released from Lunglei jail using forged documents.
- The forged documents included fake court orders and release orders.
- Most of the released inmates have since been traced and re-arrested.

Seventeen prisoners were allegedly released from Mizoram's Lunglei District Jail between January 30 and March 18, 2026, through the use of forged court documents and fake release orders. These inmates were incarcerated for serious offenses, including violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and theft cases.
The fraudulent scheme came to light on April 27, 2026, when the Lunglei Police Station received a First Information Report from the District and Sessions Judge. Discrepancies in documents presented by two undertrial prisoners on April 24, 2026, raised suspicion, as their hearing dates were incorrectly stated.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that multiple inmates had secured release using fabricated judicial documents. A large-scale police operation was launched, leading to the re-arrest of 11 of the 15 initially identified prisoners. Subsequent investigations revealed the total number of illegally released prisoners to be 17.
Two main accused individuals, believed to have orchestrated the fraud by collecting between Rs 4,000 and Rs 50,000 from inmates, were arrested on May 1, 2026. Forged documents were allegedly prepared using computers at a local printing shop and within the jail office. The investigation is ongoing, with seized computers sent for forensic examination.
