Following the child's recovery, her mother, Jami Makala Owens, was arrested. Information suggests Owens may have been experiencing a possible overdose when authorities first encountered her in a hotel lobby prior to Anastasia's disappearance. The child was found with an unidentified man in a hotel room where narcotics were discovered.
Authorities believe Anastasia's father, Thomas Zachariah Mason, may have taken her after her mother was hospitalized. An investigation was launched by the Department of Children and Families due to the child and parents being missing. The exact charges against Owens have not been disclosed.
