Mis-sold Horses Lead to Severe Injuries

A teenage girl sustained a severe head injury, including concussion, after a horse purchased online bucked and kicked her. Her mother described the terrifying incident, where her daughter was found motionless, fearing the worst. This event is part of a pattern where five women allege that horse seller Tasha Lee Hopkins mis-sold them animals that were either unsafe or had serious, undisclosed health problems.

One buyer, Kayleigh Sweet, was awarded £11,000 in damages after purchasing a horse named Otto for £6,250. Otto was advertised as sound but was later found to have severe arthritis, a condition so serious that euthanasia had been previously advised. Another buyer, Hayley Vaughan, bought a horse named Bonnie for £1,400, only to discover it had a painful spinal condition rendering it unrideable.

Concerns are mounting over the lack of regulation in horse trading, with a welfare organization emphasizing the need for sellers and buyers to conduct thorough due diligence. Unlike other animals, there are no industry standards for horse sales. Facebook has removed content related to the alleged mis-selling operations after being contacted by the BBC.

Prospective buyers are urged to view horses in person, conduct thorough checks, and use their own veterinarians for pre-purchase examinations. The call for digital horse passports is also growing, as paper versions can be manipulated, potentially hiding crucial medical histories and leaving buyers vulnerable to undisclosed conditions.
