New Database to Enhance Migrant Worker Safety in Fishing Harbors
18 Jun
Summary
- Police and Fisheries departments to create migrant worker database.
- Database aims to track workers for crime prevention and compensation.
- Process involves collecting identity cards and fingerprints from workers.

Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police R. Stalin has initiated a project to establish a database for migrant workers employed at the district's three government fishing harbors. This joint effort by the Police and Fisheries departments aims to improve the tracking of these workers, who are often difficult to identify due to a lack of proper authentication.
The new database will include collected identity cards and fingerprints, assisting in preventing crimes involving migrant workers, whether as victims or suspects. It will also streamline the process of securing compensation for them in case of workplace accidents or sea-related incidents, a challenge previously faced by fishermen's associations.
Collection of details will predominantly occur on weekends to accommodate the workers' schedules. The initiative is set to be extended to other harbors after the fishing ban period on the west coast concludes. This measure is intended to ensure both crime prevention and workplace safety for the migrant population.
