An 18-year-old male, Jeferzon Noel Mendoza Herrera, has been arrested for his alleged role in a fatal shooting outside the Habibi Mini Market in Little Havana in December 2025. The incident resulted in the death of 29-year-old Desiree Gonzalez, a bystander. Surveillance footage showed an argument erupting between individuals on bicycles and two people outside the store, leading to gunfire.
Gonzalez, who was reportedly experiencing homelessness, was struck and killed while caught in the crossfire. Authorities confirmed she was not the intended target of the shooting. Cellphone data and corroborating evidence reportedly placed Mendoza Herrera at the scene.
In addition to the murder charge, Mendoza Herrera is also accused of attempted murder in a separate incident on January 22, 2026. Four other individuals, including an unnamed minor, have been arrested in connection with both shootings. Mendoza Herrera is currently in custody without bond.
