Meta Manager Sues Over Falsified Green Card Letter
23 Aug
Summary
- Ex-manager sued Meta for wrongful termination over immigration document dispute.
- He refused to sign an exaggerated Green Card reference letter for a colleague.
- He claims retaliation after raising concerns about inaccurate statements.

In 2024, James Tillinghast, a former Product Design Manager at Meta, initiated a lawsuit against the company, alleging wrongful termination. The core of the dispute centers on Tillinghast's refusal to sign an immigration document for a colleague.
The document, a reference letter for a Green Card application, reportedly contained claims of $638 million in additional advertising revenue and significant contributions to AI tools. Tillinghast revised the letter to state only facts he could truthfully endorse, as he believed the original claims were exaggerated.
Following his refusal to sign the original letter, Tillinghast's access was revoked, and he was terminated in September 2024. Despite Meta citing performance issues, Tillinghast contends this was retaliatory, as he had no prior negative performance records. The lawsuit also accuses Meta of preferential immigration assistance based on national origin.
