Commuters experienced a terrifying evening at Melbourne's Flinders Street Station on Saturday night when a group of youths allegedly engaged in a fight involving knives. The incident caused shock among passengers, who sought safety as the brawl unfolded.
Authorities responded swiftly, with Protective Services Officers boarding a train where four boys were apprehended and machetes were confiscated. An additional two youths were arrested in the vicinity of the station. A 17-year-old boy suffered an arm laceration and required hospital treatment.
A 22-year-old man was charged with affray, reckless injury, assault with a weapon, and possessing a prohibited weapon, and was granted bail. The remaining five youths, aged between 13 and 16, were released by police.
Government minister Harriet Shing asserted that measures including changes to bail laws and the machete ban are proving effective, contributing to declining crime rates. She stated that approximately 18,000 weapons and 17,000 machetes have been surrendered or seized since a 2025 amnesty. However, opposition spokesperson David Southwick countered that knife attacks are increasing, criticizing the government's policies as ineffective.
