Sydney Student Slain: Melburnians Linked to Fatal Gangland Hit

Four individuals from Melbourne, Victoria, have been implicated in a fatal shooting that occurred in Sydney's south-west, an incident police suspect is part of an escalating gangland conflict. The firearm used in the death of Marco Tapia, 23, on September 1, has been ballistically connected to three separate crime scenes.

Investigators allege the four Victorians were contracted by a faction of the Alameddine crime network to commit violent acts against associates of the 'Coconut Cartel'. The group reportedly travelled from Melbourne on August 29, arriving in Sydney on August 30.

On August 31, the individuals are accused of a home invasion in Hurstville, using a sledgehammer to gain entry and discharging a firearm into a wall. They also allegedly fired shots into vehicles at a property in Turrella. The firearm was later recovered from a home in Glen Alpine, the scene of Mr. Tapia's death.

Two teenagers have since been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting. The four Victorians, who have not been charged with murder but face other accusations, were remanded in custody in Melbourne, with authorities concerned they may flee the country. They are expected to be transferred to New South Wales to face formal charges.
