A Royal Marine, Joseph Jones, 22, has been sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment for the manslaughter of Cemal John Yilmaz, 29. The fatal incident occurred outside The Loft bar and grill in Exmouth, Devon, on December 13, 2026. Jones delivered a single, powerful punch to Mr. Yilmaz's jaw after Mr. Yilmaz joked that Jones was from Birmingham, not Wolverhampton.
Mr. Yilmaz, characterized as a 'gentle giant' and a 'big softie,' was described as never being aggressive and was in good spirits that evening, engaging in friendly interactions. The blow, which Jones later attributed to a 'second or two of madness' and a refusal to be disrespected, caused Mr. Yilmaz to fall unconscious before hitting the ground. He sustained a broken jaw and fractured skull, succumbing to his injuries on December 16, 2026.
During the sentencing at Exeter Crown Court, Judge James Patrick acknowledged Jones's remorse but emphasized the devastating loss to Mr. Yilmaz's loved ones. Despite the sentence, Mr. Yilmaz's mother stated that justice had not been done. Jones's military career is now over following the conviction.
