Pharmacist Loses Thousands of Doses, Keeps License
19 Aug
Summary
- Pharmacist improperly dispensed tens of thousands of doses.
- Missing controlled substances included oxycodone and hydromorphone.
- He admitted to drug use at work and failing to report shortages.
Glen Pauch, a pharmacist at a Pharmasave in Portage la Prairie, will keep his professional license following admissions of extensive misconduct between June 2020 and October 2021. A College of Pharmacists of Manitoba decision revealed that 39,000 doses of controlled substances went missing while Pauch improperly dispensed them to 11 patients. This included significant amounts of oxycodone and hydromorphone. Pauch admitted to dispensing drugs without prescriptions, faking records, and providing excess quantities. He also acknowledged using drugs at work, with pharmacy staff observing signs of impairment and even finding a syringe cap. Despite these serious violations and an interim suspension, the panel opted for rehabilitation, imposing restrictions, fines, and mandatory counselling. Pauch's suspension technically ended in May, with his license now heavily regulated.
