A restaurant worker from Osaka, Mayu Yoshida, 32, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding Shueisha's Jump Character Store. Between October 2023 and her arrest on August 4, 2026, Yoshida used 238 fake accounts to place over 4,000 orders without any intention to pay.
Her scheme involved utilizing convenience store prepayment options, allowing orders to automatically cancel. She also placed over 2,100 cash-on-delivery orders, refusing packages, and sometimes used fictitious addresses. These actions resulted in approximately 7.5 million yen (about $47,000) in unrecoverable shipping and return fees for Shueisha.
The fraudulent activity not only incurred direct financial losses but also caused operational disruptions. Temporary stock shortages occurred due to the flood of fake orders, preventing paying customers from making purchases and straining the store's logistics. Shueisha filed a complaint with police in June 2025, leading to Yoshida's arrest.
