- Woman was jailed for inciting hatred against asylum seekers.
A man has been handed a 12-month community order with a probation requirement for making a threatening Facebook comment. Jake Newman, 35, of Kingsley Road, Northampton, admitted to sending a communication threatening death or serious harm.
The comment, posted on August 22, 2025, beneath a Northampton Chronicle article about Lucy Connolly's release, stated: "Time to treat her house the way she wanted hotels treated, just make sure she's in it and not able to get out."
Connolly had previously been jailed for inciting racial hatred after calling for hotels housing asylum seekers to be set on fire. Newman was arrested on the same day his comment was reported.
During sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court, Judge Smith described Newman's actions as a "dangerous, potentially very risky criminal act." Newman claimed he had no intention of causing alarm but was found to be reckless as to whether the threat would cause fear.
Defence counsel noted Newman's anxiety and an acquired brain injury affecting his impulsivity. The judge accepted Newman's remorse and his lower risk of reoffending, warning him of potential prison time if he fails to comply with the community order.
