A critical incident investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot by police in Gunnedah on Friday, January 16, 2026. The incident occurred around 1:40 PM when officers were dispatched to a property on Quia Road to conduct a welfare check.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with a man outside the residence. He then retreated inside, only to reappear armed with a bow and arrow. Police report that the man directed the weapon towards the officers, prompting them to take cover.
In response, a police firearm was discharged. The man sustained a gunshot wound and, despite receiving treatment from paramedics, was pronounced dead at the scene. The State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will lead the investigation, with oversight from the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
