Noise feud: Man poisons neighbor's fish
4 Aug
Summary
- Man admits using motor oil to kill neighbor's fish.
- Noise from fishpond water pump caused frustration.
- Court heard of repeated warnings before damage occurred.

A long-standing neighbor dispute escalated dramatically when Gerry Duffy, 76, admitted to intentionally harming his neighbor's fish and destroying a water pump. The court heard that Duffy had been driven to "sheer frustration and lack of sleep" by the noise emanating from a water pump servicing his neighbor Andreas Ptohides's fishpond.
Duffy, residing on Hadley Road in Barnet, north London, pleaded guilty on the day his trial was scheduled to commence. He confessed to damaging the pond, its inhabitants, and the associated water pump and pipes in March. This act of vandalism led to the demise of five or six Koi carp and caused an estimated £565 in damages.
During proceedings at Willesden Magistrates' Court, prosecutors highlighted that Duffy had issued prior warnings to Ptohides, stating he would "take matters into his own hands" if the noise issue was not resolved. CCTV footage confirmed Duffy entering the neighbor's garden and causing the damage. His defense argued that his actions were out of character, stemming from prolonged distress over the persistent noise.
