A 40-year-old man, Arno Engels, has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 80-year-old Anthony Scarrott. The plea occurred at Hove Crown Court in January 2026. Mr. Scarrott died three days after sustaining serious injuries at an address in Worthing on September 11, 2025.
Engels, who knew the victim, slapped Mr. Scarrott across the face. This caused the 80-year-old to fall backward, hit his head, and later succumb to his injuries in hospital. The man of no fixed address was initially arrested on suspicion of assault, then rearrested and charged with murder before admitting to manslaughter.
He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled for sentencing on March 25, 2026, at Hove Crown Court. Authorities expressed condolences to Mr. Scarrott's family and friends.
