An Illinois man, Kevan Works, 66, faces charges of first-degree murder and concealing a death after allegedly killing his mother, Daniest Graves, 88. Graves' body was discovered on April 7, concealed within a rug in a room blocked by a bookcase in her Chicago basement. Prosecutors stated Graves was last seen alive on March 26.
Graves' sister contacted police on March 28 after Works prevented her from checking on her sibling. Works, who had been residing with his mother, claimed he had not seen her since March 27. The victim's body was found partially wrapped in garbage bags and duct tape, exhibiting 17 injuries, including knife wounds.
During the investigation, police found a folding knife, brass knuckles, a hammer, a bowing knife, and bleach within the residence. The victim's purse and wallet were discovered in a garage garbage can, and a cleaned jewelry box was also recovered. A judge suggested the crime might have been motivated by financial gain.
