30 May
Summary
- Man jailed for life after torturing 93-year-old friend for over 24 hours.
- Killer acted on paranoia fueled by heavy cannabis use.
- Victim endured sustained assault of punches, kicks, and strangulation.

A 40-year-old man, Samuel Field, has received a life sentence for the murder of his 93-year-old friend, Martin Glynn. The conviction followed a brutal, over 24-hour torture session at Field's flat in Northamptonshire in September 2024. Field subjected Glynn to a sustained attack involving punches, kicks, and strangulation, driven by paranoia and intense cannabis use.
Prosecutors detailed how Field became increasingly unstable and threatening in the months leading up to the fatal assault. His fixation on a perceived betrayal by Glynn, specifically over a house key, escalated into a day of violence. Evidence showed Glynn being repeatedly attacked over approximately 29 hours.
Field, who had a history of violent offences and was on license at the time, attempted to clean the scene with bleach. Emergency services were eventually called on September 20, 2024, but Glynn did not survive. He passed away on December 26, 2024, from pneumonia, with the judge noting Field knew his victim was at his mercy.
During sentencing, the judge highlighted the severity of the attack, including breaking the victim's thyroid bone. Field was ordered to serve a minimum of 22 years before being eligible for parole, a sentence aimed at providing closure for Mr. Glynn's family.
