A man identified as Chee Kit 'Max' Chong, aged 47, received a six-year prison sentence for enslaving a 61-year-old woman for nine months. He was found guilty of intentionally possessing the woman as a slave and one count of assault. The victim escaped Chong's Melbourne home in October 2022, having been subjected to his control since January 2022.
During her captivity, the woman was forced to perform unpaid domestic duties, including cleaning and caring for Chong's children. She was also coerced into providing services like foot massages under threats of violence or starvation. The judge emphasized Chong's high moral culpability, describing his actions as callous and cruel exploitation of the victim's vulnerabilities.
Chong is eligible for parole after serving four years of his sentence and is expected to be deported to Malaysia. His wife, Angie Liaw, 32, was also on trial but was found not guilty of assisting her husband and acquitted by law.
