A 44-year-old man, Amritpal Singh, has received a 15-year jail sentence for the fatal stabbing of his housemate, Amit Kumar. The tragic event unfolded on October 5 last year at their shared residence in Sawley Street, Leicester.
Singh was acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter following a trial at Leicester Crown Court in March. The court heard that the stabbing occurred after a disagreement between the two men, who had been consuming alcohol. Evidence presented, including CCTV footage, showed Singh attempting to conceal the weapon by discarding it in a bin, hoping it would not be found.
Investigators successfully recovered the knife from a wheelie bin, a crucial piece of evidence. Singh, who fled the scene shortly after paramedics arrived, was arrested later that morning at a friend's house. He initially claimed self-defense, stating the stabbing was accidental, but his actions indicated a clear attempt to obstruct justice.
