A man identified as Devontea Stubbs, 34, was arrested on Sunday following a dramatic incident that began with a traffic stop. A state trooper initiated the stop on an I-95 off-ramp at Boynton Beach Boulevard around 3:40 PM due to an expired vehicle tag.
According to the police report, a background check revealed Stubbs had a suspended license and eleven prior suspensions over the past decade. When ordered to exit his vehicle, Stubbs reportedly refused. As the trooper reached into the car, Stubbs accelerated, dragging the officer 15 feet and initiating a high-speed chase.
The pursuit led officers through Boynton Beach, where Stubbs was accused of driving 80 mph in a 30 mph zone, entering opposing traffic lanes, and causing several crashes. He eventually abandoned his vehicle at the Boynton Beach Mall and fled on foot, with Boynton Beach police joining the pursuit.
Body-worn camera footage released by police captured officers receiving the call and tracking Stubbs using a K-9 unit to the Sealofts community. Stubbs was apprehended after officers and the K-9 scaled a fence. He faces numerous charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and had an active warrant for a previous burglary charge. Stubbs is currently held without bond at the Palm Beach County Jail.
