A 42-year-old man passed away after falling ill while in the custody of central London police. On October 2 at 04:27 BST, officers at Charing Cross custody suite in Westminster discovered the man unresponsive in his cell. First aid was administered by officers before paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital, where he died on Sunday.
The man had been arrested on the afternoon of October 1 for recall to prison. The Metropolitan Police stated that a standard risk assessment was completed upon his arrival in custody. Following the man being found unresponsive, the force's Directorate of Professional Standards was notified, triggering a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The IOPC has confirmed that it will be investigating the actions of the custody staff involved. They have assured that the man's family will be kept informed of the investigation's progress. This incident occurs after Charing Cross police station faced scrutiny due to an undercover investigation into officer conduct, which has led to the dismissal of 13 officers from the station.
