21 Feb
Summary
- A woman's sister reported alleged sustained harassment by her husband.
- The victim had previously returned home following an assault.
- A case of abetment to suicide was filed after the woman's death.

In Mahim, a man has been booked for abetment to suicide following a complaint lodged by his in-laws. The complaint was filed by Manda Hari Mhatre, a 40-year-old vegetable seller from Raigad, who alleged that her sister, Yashoda Pednekar (35), was driven to suicide due to sustained harassment by her husband, Shrikant Vinayak Pednekar.
Yashoda, who married Shrikant in 2013, reportedly endured repeated physical and mental abuse over the years. According to the complainant, Yashoda had previously returned to her parental home in Raigad in 2016 after being assaulted and thrown out. A court settlement was reached in 2017 following a complaint.
However, in 2023, Yashoda informed her family about renewed conflicts and beatings from her husband and mother-in-law. She briefly stayed with her sister before being taken back to Mumbai by her husband. Tragically, on January 1, 2026, the family received word from the accused's mother that Yashoda had allegedly hanged herself at their Mahim residence.
The suicide, believed to have occurred between the night of December 31, 2025, and the morning of January 1, 2026, is attributed by the complainant to continuous harassment. Legal action has been sought against Shrikant Pednekar.
