Man Accused of Stealing 100 Sets of Human Remains

Authorities in Philadelphia have uncovered a disturbing collection of approximately 100 sets of human remains, leading to the arrest of Jonathan Christ Gerlach, 34. The discovery was made following a monthslong investigation into break-ins at Mount Moriah Cemetery, where at least 26 mausoleums had been desecrated since early November. Police were alerted after finding bones and skulls in the backseat of a car parked near the cemetery.

Gerlach's Ephrata home and storage unit were subsequently searched, revealing a gruesome stash that included over 100 human skulls, long bones, mummified hands and feet, and decomposing torsos. Some remains were found hanging, others pieced together, and many were simply skulls displayed on shelves. Jewelry believed to be linked to the graves, including a pacemaker, was also recovered.

Gerlach was arrested as he returned to his car carrying a crowbar and a bag containing remains of two small children, three skulls, and other bones. He allegedly admitted to taking about 30 sets of remains. He is currently jailed on a $1 million bond, facing charges that include 100 counts each of abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property.
