A 36-year-old man, Alberto Velasquez-Rivera, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and assault following an incident on Sunday. Police allege Velasquez-Rivera stabbed an Allsup's employee in the chest with a small knife during a dispute outside the gas station on Airport Road.
The incident began when Velasquez-Rivera and three other men arrived at the Allsup's. An attendant claimed he went outside to ask the men to leave, leading to an argument and a physical fight. During the altercation, Velasquez-Rivera allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the employee. Surveillance footage from the gas station appears to corroborate the employee's account.
Velasquez-Rivera was booked into the Santa Fe County jail and was scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday. He denied stabbing the employee during an interview, attributing blood found on his clothing to a prior motorcycle crash. Investigators have not yet recovered the alleged weapon but planned to search the vehicle. The employee sustained a non-life-threatening wound requiring stitches.
