A 24-year-old man from Leeds was arrested this week in connection with a "sickening" case of large-scale illegal waste dumping. The incident involved approximately 30,000 tonnes of shredded waste discovered at Cave's Inn Pits, a site of special scientific interest near Shawell, Leicestershire.
Environment Agency officials reported that soil was used to conceal the waste, which covered an area equivalent to a football pitch. This protected site is vital for its neutral marsh, scrub, grassland, and pool habitats, supporting a diverse range of breeding birds.
The arrest is also linked to an ongoing investigation into similar large-scale illegal waste dumping at a site in Wigan. Three other men were arrested in connection with that incident.
