Kenneth Bardwell, 66, faces wire fraud charges for an alleged investment scam that began in October 2018. Authorities claim Bardwell solicited millions from investors through his company, Motown Sports Group Holdings, promising a massive sports and entertainment complex in Romulus. This development was to feature numerous amenities, including an arena, water park, and hotels.
However, federal prosecutors allege Bardwell made minimal effort to acquire land for the project. Instead, he reportedly diverted investor money towards personal luxuries, including at least $200,000 spent at strip clubs and $420,000 at a jewelry establishment. He also funded a lavish lifestyle for himself, his wife, and his girlfriend.
Bardwell's scheme extended to seeking public funds from Romulus, requesting $152 million in bonds and tax increases for the $1.44 billion development. The city ultimately denied the proposal due to legal concerns, though Bardwell had assured investors the deal was progressing. City officials later expressed dismay at the alleged attempt to exploit Romulus and its residents.
