India Warns Travelers of Maldives' Strict New Drug Laws
24 Apr
Summary
- Maldives enacted new drug laws with severe penalties.
- Indian nationals urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling.
- Possession of even small drug quantities may lead to severe punishment.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of India has cautioned Indian nationals traveling to the Maldives regarding the country's strict new anti-drug legislation. Effective March 2026, amendments to the Maldives' Drugs Act impose severe penalties, including life imprisonment and potentially the death penalty for drug-related offenses, particularly for possession or importation of significant quantities of narcotics.
Recent arrests of foreign nationals, including Indian citizens, for drug offenses in the Maldives have prompted this advisory. The NCB emphasizes that even possession of small quantities of prohibited substances can result in severe judicial consequences. Travelers are urged to remain vigilant at all transit points and refrain from carrying baggage or items for unknown individuals.
The High Commission of India in Malé has also reinforced these warnings, advising citizens to adhere strictly to local laws. The NCB stresses that ignorance of Maldivian law is not a defense, and compliance with regulations is paramount to avoid severe punishments during their visits.
