Tragedy struck the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court early Thursday when a Tamil Nadu Special Police officer ended his life. M Manickam, stationed at the court's main gate, reportedly used his service rifle to shoot himself in the chest around 3 am.
Manickam, a member of the 6th Battalion, had been serving for two years and was unmarried. His sudden death has prompted an immediate investigation by high court police into the exact circumstances that led to the incident.
The officer's body was subsequently recovered and transported to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.
