Court Demands Report on Official Misconduct Cases
9 Oct
Summary
- High court seeks details on disciplinary proceedings against officials.
- Inquiry delayed for officials accused of swindling hostel funds.
- Rs 2.35 crore funds for students' needs were allegedly misappropriated.
The Madras High Court has mandated the state government to submit a detailed report on all disciplinary proceedings initiated against errant officials. This order was issued by a division bench comprising Justice P. Velmurugan and Justice K.K. Ramakrishnan.
The court expressed strong dissatisfaction with the prolonged delay in initiating a departmental inquiry. The case involves officials accused of misappropriating approximately Rs 2.35 crore sanctioned for students in Adi Dravidar welfare hostels in Sivaganga district between 2017 and 2023.
Investigations revealed that funds intended for students' basic needs were allegedly swindled by officials and staff, with no amounts credited to individual student accounts. While a revenue inspector and her husband were arrested, the involvement of eight tahsildars has raised concerns about reluctant investigations by district crime branch officials. The court's direction aims to ensure transparency and prompt action in addressing official misconduct.
