Federal authorities have arrested 18 people in Los Angeles in a broad effort to dismantle drug operations in MacArthur Park. The Department of Justice announced the arrests on Wednesday, targeting what they described as an "open-air drug market" in the park. This area has historically struggled with widespread fentanyl use, overdose deaths, and significant homeless encampments.
A total of 25 individuals now face federal charges for possession with intent to distribute and distribution of controlled substances. Seven defendants remain fugitives. The investigation, a collaboration between the DEA, LAPD, and LA Sheriff's Department since March, focused on identifying and charging drug distributors operating around the park.
Investigations included surveillance and undercover operations where illicit drugs were purchased. Court documents allege a couple served as a primary source for fentanyl powder and methamphetamine, working on behalf of the 18th Street gang. They allegedly facilitated drug hand-offs in the "Alvarado corridor" for street-level dealers, using their residence as a stash location.
Additional gangs, including the Crazy Riders Gang and MS-13, are reportedly involved in sourcing drugs for the area. These groups typically distribute to "runners" for street sales. Prosecutors detailed 27 separate drug deals involving fentanyl and methamphetamine between March 9 and April 15. Notably, law enforcement seized approximately 18kg (40lbs) of fentanyl from one defendant's residence.
