Three men stand accused in Belfast Crown Court of the murder of journalist Lyra McKee. The 29-year-old was fatally shot in April 2019 while observing rioting in Londonderry's Creggan area. The New IRA claimed responsibility for the shooting.
Prosecution barrister David McDowell KC detailed how a forensic image analyst identified 19 individuals involved in the disorder. He stated that Peter Cavanagh, Jordan Devine, and Paul McIntyre, along with Joseph Anthony Campbell and Christopher Joseph Gillen, can be linked to the scene on April 18, 2019, through imagery analysis.
McDowell highlighted that those engaged in rioting on April 16 and 18 demonstrated 'forensic awareness' by burning their clothing. The absence of certain clothing items belonging to defendants, which were not found during searches or produced later, suggests deliberate disposal, an argument the prosecution considers a significant part of their case.
