Corvette Theft Exposes Multi-Million Dollar Stolen Car Ring

What began as the theft of a single Chevrolet Corvette Stingray from a Thousand Oaks dealership on May 19, 2026, has unraveled an elaborate eight-car theft ring. The operation, valued at over $1.3 million, utilized altered Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), counterfeit license plates, and fraudulent registration documents to conceal stolen luxury vehicles. Detectives, working with the Auto Theft Task Force, conducted a coordinated operation into Los Angeles County on July 1, 2026, leading to the arrests of Brandon Taylor, 27, and John Ivy, 39. Both were booked on suspicion of vehicle theft, conspiracy, and possession of stolen vehicles. Recovered vehicles include a Lamborghini Aventador, two Porsches, a BMW X7 M60i, a GMC Hummer, a Ford Shelby GT500, a Chevrolet Silverado 2500, and a Chevrolet Colorado. Investigators also seized blank temporary plates and key fobs, revealing the sophisticated tools of the trade. This case underscores the risks associated with purchasing used vehicles, particularly the practice of VIN cloning, where a stolen car's identity is replaced with that of a legitimate vehicle. Buyers are advised to meticulously verify VINs in multiple locations. On a national level, vehicle thefts have decreased, yet California continues to report the highest numbers, with organized crews targeting high-value vehicles for the profit potential through title-washing schemes.
