A mother in Louisiana, Jeanette Edmonds, has been arrested and charged following multiple alleged attempts to abandon her 8-year-old son on March 1, 2026. The Ponchatoula Police Department began investigating when the boy was found alone at a laundromat. Detectives learned that earlier that day, Edmonds had first tried to leave the child at a cemetery and then at a nearby farm. Edmonds, from Tickfaw, was later located in Harvey and subsequently booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on charges of cruelty to juveniles, child desertion, and criminal abandonment, with her bond set at $55,000.
Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson stated that Edmonds provided no reason for her actions and did not inquire about her son's well-being. The child was temporarily placed in police care and later reunited with his father, who drove over four hours to retrieve him. If convicted of cruelty to juveniles in Louisiana, Edmonds could face up to 10 years in prison, with potential for up to 20 years given the victim's age.
