A man celebrated for saving a police officer's life has tragically died in a suspected hit-and-run incident. Anthony Canty, aged 39, from Maldon, Essex, passed away in hospital on May 25th, four days after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Tiptree on May 21st.
This incident occurred shortly after Mr. Canty had won a £1 million Euromillions jackpot in May 2020. Just days before his lottery win, he administered CPR to a police officer who had collapsed on a bus, demonstrating his life-saving actions.
Essex Police confirmed that an 18-year-old driver of a Ford KA was arrested in connection with the collision. He was initially detained on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop. The driver has since been released under investigation while police continue their inquiries and appeal for witnesses, particularly those with CCTV or dash cam footage of the incident on Maldon Road.
